My salve making ability has come a long way and I have a lighter, more moisturizing recipe to share with an easier, less-mess method! This recipe can be adapted to include which ever essential oils you wanted or even using infused oils with calendula, plantain or goldenrod, which ever you fancy!
Salves have been created by homesteaders and herbalists for hundreds of years to help heal various skin and muscle issues such as infection, spasms, cuts, abrasions, and rashes. And although we could simply run to the drug mart to pick up a modern cream, I prefer the romance of making it myself because I know exactly what goes in it and what I leave out, like preservatives, fragrances, and other chemicals or toxins I just don't need absorbed into my body through the skin.

What's in this DIY Salve:
ORGANIC COCONUT OIL is becoming a household staple because of it's versatility from cooking to skin care. It is perfect for homemade salves because it is moisturizing and contains lauric acid which acts as an antibacterial agent. It also helps to slow the evaporation of the essential oils so they are able sit topically on your skin longer.
SHEA NUT BUTTER is high in Vitamin E and A, has anti-inflammatory properties and is high in fats to thoroughly moisturizer the skin and maintain a healthy Hydro Lipid Barrier.
LOCAL BEESWAX helps keep your salves stable and from becoming a liquid in warmer temperatures. Ok, so it doesn't have to be local but you should definitely support your local bees and beekeepers!
CPTG ESSENTIAL OILS are of the highest quality out there and are free of preservatives, fillers and additives. They can have many different benefits to your body and skin so choose which will work best for the salve you are creating. A common concoction has Lavender, Frankincense and Tea Tree to help relieve a variety of skin irritations.
How I make a salve:
Usually when making salves you require a double boiler or a make shift double boiler that involves a pot with water and another heat safe container inside but when using beeswax, the salve becomes stubborn to clean off. I came up with a new solution for the mess and it works wonderfully.
| Add 10 drops of each for a MUSCLE RUB! |
After shredding of grating my beeswax block, I place all the ingredients in a canning jar where the salve will stay! Genius, right! I thought so! I use a canning rim on the bottom of the pot and out just enough water to warm the outside of the salve jar. I place my full jar of salve ingredients on top so the jar doesn't crack from direct heat and melt is over medium heat. I make sure the water doesn't boil and shake the jars but essentially, I can set up and do other things in the kitchen!
| Rims prevent the jars from breaking from direct heat. |
Once all the beeswax has melted I use a jar lifter from my canning supplies and place it on the counter. I let it cool for 5 minutes before adding my essential oils because the heat could ruin those volatile compounds that make them FANTASTIC!
| I stirred my salve occasionally with a metal chopstick. |

Baby bottoms have very delicate skin and it's not just because it's on a baby. Diapers are a moist, dark and humid environment unless freshly changed which is the perfect environment for fungal infections and skin irritation! Of course changing baby's bum often can prevent these from happening, but the skin is still susceptible to irritation and inflammation so I've created a baby bum spray!

This spray really isn't just for baby bottoms! You could use this on other skin irritations to promote cleansing, calming and healing!

Although my children are older and out of diapers, when my five year old has come down with a flu or cold, he will wear a pull up to bed because he body is out of sorts and he sleeps like a log, or sleep through a kitchen fire! For more of my favourite oils to use on children, read this helpful post!
LAVENDER | Soothing and calming on skin irritations, and imperfections.
FRANKINCENSE | Promotes cellular health and a healthy inflammatory response
TEA TREE | Cleansing and purifying to the skin.
To make the Baby Bum Spray, simply combine 5 drops of each essential oil in a 2 oz misting bottle and fill with coconut oil.
I love to use coconut oil in this Baby Bum Spray because:
- helps to create a barrier to stop moisture from getting to the skin,
- helps to delay the evaporation of the essential oil goodness so the oils can work their magic, longer,
- oil and water don't mix well,
- and because it is moisturizing, naturally antibacterial and antifungal!
See how simple that is! If you want to use essential oils for the wellness of your baby, I highly recommend Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils because they are pure, potent and effective.

Dandelions have so many benefits and most people consider them a nuisance weed, dousing them with chemicals and digging them up. Why not make use of them! I made myself a salve to use as a moisturizer for dry skin and Keratosis Pilaris (bumps on the back of your upper arm) to soothe imperfections, to relieve occasional muscle aches and pains AND it can be used as on skin irritations

To make my Dandelion Lavender Salve
- I picked some dandelion flowers from a pesticide free lawn with the kidlets.
- I spread my dandelions on some parchment paper and left them outside in the sun to dehydrate. I chose parchment paper because it is white and would reflect the sunshine, but foil would work too. We want to remove the extra water in the flowers and this day happened to be hot and sunny. You could also place them on a cookie sheet and bake them at a really low temperature, I'd say 200F for about an hour, or in an actual dehydrator.
- Next, place the flowers into a jar and fill with olive oil. There are two methods of infusion. One is slow-infusion where I leave my jar in a sunny spot for two weeks. The other is quick where you place your open jar of dandelion oil inside a pot of warm water with the lid off, heating the water on low medium heat for an hour to infuse the oil. I
chosewanted to choose slow infusion because I didn't have the rest of the ingredients to finish my balm and creating this completely off grid, would have been kind of rewarding... But! I found some local beeswax and because I have dry skin from an old sunburn, I am eager to use to try it, so I went with the path of least waiting! - After two or three weeks of slow infusion or an hour on the stove, strain your dandelion infused oil and discard the flowers. I really squeezed it with the back of my tablespoon to get all the medicinal goodness out!
Add 1 cup of oil with 4 tablespoons of beeswax pellets or shavings and melt together over low heat. Let cool for 10 minutes then add 15 drops of lavender essential oil. The jar held 2 cups of oil, so I doubled this and have plenty to use throughout the year and to give away! {#trademethursdays anyone?} Pour into resealable containers to set! There you have it! And it works well too, like a nicer A535 or Lakota.. Once it has set, rub on your aches and pains, dry skin and abrasions!
Beeswax has an indefinite shelf life and olive oil is good for 3-4 years, so I am confident if I make a small batch each spring, I'll never have an issue with my Dandelion Lavender Salve going rancid.
